I had an interesting thought the other night. As I was reflecting on my past relationships it came to me that since the beginning of time women and men have been unable to get it right. Seriously, it all began with Adam and Eve.
Ponder this:
God made Adam to rule over the Earth. He created creature after creature, critter after critter and Adam got to name them. Yet, there was something unfulfilling about ruling over an Earth with no one to share it with. So God created Eve from Adam’s rib. She was designed to be Adam’s “helper”. Take note of that word choice. She was Adam’s helper, not his equal. In essence, she was there to support and love and nurture Adam. By design, her purpose was to serve him as a companion. She was there to fill his needs. Her needs were naturally filled by simply knowing and recognizing that she was serving Adam and serving God. She didn’t need anything else. She didn’t need to tell Adam how to rule the world or give her opinion about how he should have found their food. I would bet Adam didn’t want to hear her thoughts about how they should decorate the Garden of Eden, and I’m fairly certain it never crossed his mind to discuss his feelings about her. His focus was on ruling the world. Imagine the weight of that responsibility. When put in that context, as Adam, worrying about Eve’s personal wants would have seemed like a petty distraction from his God-given duties.
But Eve wanted more than to just serve Adam. And to this day, that is the cause of conflict in the relationships between men and women.
